She was exiting onto northbound State Highway 41 when she came to stop for traffic due to construction ahead and was struck from the rear by a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer operated by Angela Bonfield, which caused her to strike the vehicle in front of her.

Bonfield was insured by Esurance Insurance Company, and Schaumburg was insured by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company at the time of the collision.

Schaumbeurg filed a lawsuit against Bonfield and Esurance. The plaintiff alleged Bonfield was negligent in traveling at a speed too fast for conditions, and driving inattentively. She also sought underinsured motorist benefits from Liberty Mutual. Schaumburg sought compensation for her bodily injury, medical expenses, and loss of earnings.

A jury awarded the plaintiff damages in the total amount of $660,287.
